My Journey
Shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Dil Mil Gaye’ have depicted the lives of doctors as glamorous. Bollywood movies have stereotyped doctors as old men and women dressed in white coats either giving you bad news or earning loads of money. Unfortunately, this is not true for most doctors. Let us give you a glimpse of our real story through the journey of Dr Somil Savla.
The first step in his journey was a national entrance exam called NEET-UG, to be taken after finishing the 12th grade. A young Somil Savla was one of the 15 lakh young medical aspirants who took this exam on that fateful day. It took him 2 years to prepare for this 3-hour single day exam which was going to decide his future.
He cleared the exam with flying colours and secured admission for M.B.B.S at Lokmanya Tilak medical college, more popularly known as the Sion hospital, which is one of the best colleges in the state of Maharashtra.
M.B.B.S is a 5-and-a-half-year long roller coaster that involves dissecting human bodies, learning about different medicines and the human body itself and it tests you regularly through hundreds of theory exams and practical exams where real life patients are your exam cases. It also includes a year of internship where the trainee doctor takes part in managing critical emergencies, conducting deliveries and even working in villages as a medical officer.
After completing M.B.B.S, Dr Savla had to choose his specialisation. But what stood between him and his dream was one of the toughest exams in India - NEET PG. There were 19 subjects for a single paper exam occurring once a year and it was far tougher and had worse odds of success than its undergraduate counterpart as everyone who took this exam was an able, competent doctor already.
After burning the midnight oil and with a lot of persistence and perseverance, Dr Somil Savla cleared this exam in the first attempt and chose Psychiatry as his field of post-graduation. He was able to secure one of the most coveted seats in M.D. Psychiatry training in the country at Topiwala National medical college (Popularly known as Nair Hospital).
Postgraduate training in a government institution is a test of discipline, determination, physical and mental strength. Dr Savla worked as a resident medical officer whose training involved seeing thousands of patients with different kinds of illnesses and symptoms, doing a dissertation, teaching undergraduate students and learning Psychiatry from some of the best teachers in the country. His work would involve seeing patients in the Psychiatry OPD and the Psychiatry ward, in the emergency room and patients admitted in the general hospital with Psychiatric issues.
In 2020, our country suffered a national crisis which were the three waves of the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Somil was amongst the team of doctors thrust into service even before the lockdown began. He worked as a medical doctor in Covid wards, emergency services and ICUs for more than 9 months and was able to use his skills to be of service to the country.
At the end of years of training, Dr Savla had to give an exam that involved 4 senior psychiatrists testing him on his skills and knowledge before he could earn his license to practise. With the blessings of his parents, teachers and patients, he not only passed the licensing exam but also stood first in the state of Maharashtra and received a Gold Medal to signify the achievement.
Like any professional and personal journey, this one too had lots of ups and downs, unspoken sacrifices, personal struggles and tonnes of learning along the way. The journey forward is going to be dedicated to providing best quality care and treatment for his patients along with continuing the fight against stigma that is associated with mental illness through his talks, writings and online posts.
